Marsh Psychogeography Walk - meet outside Playworld 11am Saturday 5th July

Playful, mindful and quirky. Join local writer Richard Byrne for a walk around Marsh.

Psychogeography is about exploring places in a non-linear way. This won’t be a walk from A to B and it won’t involve pointing out places of local historical or cultural significance. Instead we’ll follow a set of instructions that will create the conditions to see our neighbourhood in a new way and have a truly unique experience.

The walk will not cover a huge disatnce but it will last about 45-60 minutes. Suitable for walkers of all abilities, disabilities and ages. Families welcome.

All you will need to bring is an open mind and something to take pictures with. After the walk, you will be in an ideal state of mind to enjoy the delights of the Marshian Arts Trail and we can have a cup of something at one of Marsh’s lovely cafes.

No booking required, just turn up at 11am in the Playworld car park.

Marshian Arts Craft Group 2-5pm Sunday 6th July Greenhead Park Conservatory Cafe

Relaxed craft group - bring along something you are working on, or just call in for inspiration, grab a drink, take a look at the Exodus exhibition and have a chat!

B

B on the Marshian Arts Trail (July 2025)

Born in the Noughties.

My work is a mixture of graffiti, street art and fine art. Inspired by graffitie and street art culture from a young age, also coming from a huge influence of the HipHop / Rap scene from the 90s and 2000s. My work is flexible and I really enjoy working with different materials, textures and backgrounds.

Debbie
Ball

Debbie Ball on the Marshian Arts Trail (July 2025)

Crafty Baggage was created by Debbie Ball in 2018, a life change from an engineering career to a more creative lifestyle.

Enjoying inspiring others by sharing the fun and joy of being creative by teaching craft workshops, especially felting.

Having a love of heritage textiles, I also spend a lot of time creating historical clothing, exploring natural dying, spinning, embroidery, creating crafty bits and bobs.

It’s such a privilege to be able to spend time being creative, and inspiring others, in community and private workshops and there's always an interesting challenge on the horizon.

Debbie Ball's art on the Marshian Arts Trail (July 2025)

In such a short time I have loved being involved and helping to organise craft fairs, or running workshops at local community events such as Kirklees Woven Festivals, Golcar Lily Day, Aspire Creating Communities, TSL, Fresh Futures, along with the Colne Valley Museum, and Art at the house.

James
Blamires

James Blamires on the Marshian Arts Trail (July 2025)

James is a local LGBTQ+ artist who works in both sculptural and photographic medium. Often, his work responds to social themes, architectural design, place, space and materials.

Mid-century and Brutalist architecture have consistently inspired James to create work and social housing issues, inequalities and government policy, all feeding into the work he creates. This often leaves a sense of decline from utopian dreams that ambition could never maintain.

James lived in a social housing flat independently as a teenager, and the experiences of living in such accommodation, as well as the place and those people around have been a significant factor that has driven him to continually create work around these themes, exploring identity and formative year that shape later life.

His current work explores portrait photography, in abandoned spaces, leather as a material and a consistent use of concrete within his art.

Born 1953, studied Fine Art Painting Nottingham 1971 - 1975, Leicester Uni 1977. I have lived in Marsh since 1978 and taught art at several schools.

My work combines my observations of the West Yorkshire landscape with the rich industrial heritage of the past with occasional references to music, particularly punk and The Sex Pistols who played their last UK performance at Ivanhoes, Manchester Road in 1977. All work is mixed media either on paper or found materials.

Tony Burke on the Marshian Arts Trail (July 2025)

I have lived in Marsh with my wife Barbara for 46 years. We have three children and five grandchildren, all doing brilliantly well.

When I was nine my painting was chosen for the School Christmas Card and I have never looked back. I attended Bradford School of Art in the 1970s and spent a working life designing products ranging from washing machines to furniture, with numerous patents and registered designs to my name; all the while never neglecting my love of watercolour. I retired as a furniture designer a few years ago and took on a part time watercolour-teaching rold which includes weekly Zoom tutorials and regular painting workshops. I exhibit at local venues.

My painting passion is watercolour and I strive to perfect an abstract-realism style. My motivation is always prompted by something that I have seen, preferably local.

Heather Clifford on the Marshian Arts Trail (July 2025)

This work was created while studying for a BEd in Creative Arts at Leeds Polytechnic in the early 1990s.

Though life took me in other directions, creativity has remained at the heart of everything I do - especially in championing the arts in education and inspiring children to express themselves.

I have a longstanding interest in textiles, further inspired by a recent visit to the textile department at Huddersfield University, and continue to enjoy opportunities to learn and make.

J. D. Lewis on the Marshian Arts Trail (July 2025)

I am now in the later stages of my life and I realise that I have been making, showing and selling art for more than 50 years.

Over the decades the look of the work has continally changed with the evolving themes and preoccupations. During this current period I am making work related to personal experiences and relationships. These are often combined with other imaginary events which sometimes produce a sense of enigma, humour or discord. The illustrated painting “M. Bonnard visits a garden in Marsh” is an example of this.

I live at 17 Forrest Avenue. My studio, which is on the side of the house, will be open to visitors on Saturday 12 July and Sunday 13 July from 2pm to 5pm. (The entrance is via the back gate).

Nigel Wood on the Marshian Arts Trail (July 2025)

Among other futile stuff I’m a writer and artist using found objects, primarily driftwood and unloved and abandoned furniture, to create abstract, emotional and graceful sculptures that come with a layer of stories: in the raw materials, the making and the finished object. Aesthetics first, message second, and a bit of usefulness is always handy.

At its best I hope my work can be a force for good in people's lives and offer a little beauty, spirit (and calm) among the chaos... practically and psychologically. All underpinned by a compulsive belief in luck, good people, existentialism, Yorkshire and wabi sabi.

The piece on display, what makes us... is part of a series working from home. It is also a fully functioning freestanding lamp.
